- It seems to me the concern should be what this rule is trying to accomplish instead of if there are technicalities to get around the intent of the rule. Is not this rule trying to prevent the area around the cache from being messed up? Should not whether or not the area is likely to be messed up be the guiding concern instead of if there is a way to technically get around the intent of the rule? Notwithstanding the ethical issue of messing up and abusing the land, there is the issue of we already have too many land managers banning us. We do not need to be creating examples for them to cite to ban us. Certainly there are ways one could bury a cache and not have environmental damage issues. For example, the cache page could have given a distance and direction from an easy to find spot. That way mugglers would not find it and there would not be environmental damage from searching for it with leaf blowers, shovels, etc. Should not an overriding consideration be what people are likely to do to try to find the cache? If significant environmental damage is being caused by people hunting for a cache, should not it be shut down until a means to prevent the problem (such as clearer directions) is implemented? If not, are we providing excuses for geocaching to be banned in more places? There are also indirect effects. If cachers learn that the rule on burying caches can be bent, when they cannot find a cache, they may start digging or using a leaf blower. I think the geocaching community needs to do much more or providing more information on how to search for caches and place caches without causing environmental problems. Something like the leave no trace program. If we don't we will get banned in more and more places. Glenn, I hope you and the other administrators will err on the side of caution when there are reports of problems and concerns about a cache.
