I'll play around with it.  As I said, this guy is getting - I think - possibly 
a better scan than I would get.  The errors would be even less if he had been 
more conscientious about making sure the words in the margins didn't get 
zorched.

  If you're going to try working with the contrast setting, one general thing 
is that for thinner or shinier paper you need a lower contrast setting, and for 
thicker coarser paper the setting should be higher. The range will vary 
depending on what scanner you use.
