I work for an insurance company and we are required to keep a 4 week rotation
with monthly backups that are kept forever. Very costly and requires a lot of
storage space but required just the same!

although I am not working at a law firm we are using 90 days and 3 days, and
thats only on sent items, but i still take a full monthly image which is not
overwritten. i would say you need to be really cautious with a law firm. a
monthly permanent backup of your store onto a DDS tape or similar and
permanent offsite storage (or at least whack it into a fire safe) coupled
with a 45 day age limit at least on your server. once a year has passed you
could maybe consider destroying the oldest tapes.
unfortunately its the 6 month old email that is suddenly required in a case
and i have been asked to recover something that old in the past.
