Morning Joshua,

I look after many applications in my real life! Some use synonyms,
others don't. Of the ones which do use them, I have a mix of public and
private synonyms.

All synonyms are for table, view, package etc - there are no column
synonyms (at least, I've not come across any).

In applications where none are in use, each user logs into the
application schema directly (yuk!) and then may have to provide a
personal "account" name and password to actually use the application. A
few systems actually specify the schema owner name as part of the SQL,
so no synonyms are required.

In other systems, the users have their own Oracle database account and
log into that, the synonyms are then used to point the application's SQL
at the appropriate application schema.

HTH

Cheers,
Norm.
