Ah well, I wanted this to be self contained and 100% in the database. Java was the way to go I am afraid. Though it could be done in Perl, it didn't seem appropriate for the article. The Java was minimal BTW, no way to get directory listings from a server in PL/SQL. Doing this in Perl would have been a lot more work and too much detail to include in an article. Now if they want to pay me for a Perl version...
