Hi Judy, I decided to change the subject and hopefully make it a bit more related to the actual message content. Anyway, I had a battery for the Optacon ii finally give out, but Richard Oehm was able to rebuild it in it's original case and it works very well for me now. I really never realized that so many people had problems with the optacon ii array until folks began expressing their opinions on this list. One thing I really like about the ii is that I can turn back the intensity control and significantly reduce the noise from the Optacon. I don't know why this doesn't work for me as well on the r1-d, but that's the way it is. I think that in a direct comparison the r1-d is more sensitive and does a better job on very light print than the ii, and I've tried this comparison using the same camera on both machines. The one thing I do wish is that it were possible to permanently set the refresh rate when using the crt lense rather than having to reset it each time the unit is turned on. As I recall, the ability to vary refresh rate was an add-on feature after the ii was initially released. I do find it somewhat more versatile with the 3 settings on the mode switch. My wife also uses the Optacon. She was a medical transcriber at ucsf before she retired in 1997, and still uses it for many things. Scanners are great and we definitely use them here, but often it's just faster to scan something quickly with an Optacon rather than using the scanner and software.
