I am definitely grateful for my Optacon and CRT lens as I begin operating
my new Tascam DP-24 SD. This recorder has a display about 3in square, and
it is tricky but readable with an Optacon with CRT lens. When I tried to
read it with the standard camera, I could not make out most of the letters.
I think the backlighting might be part of the problem; I know that although
the legibility is not perfect with a CRT lens, it is manageable. Another
kink in the system is the fact that, on the main menu at least, there is not
a lot of change in contrast between a selected and a nonselected option.
Still, I consider the recorder usable without sighted assistance after a few
initial settings such as time and date are established. This recorder is
probably not a good choice for a rank novice who is visually impaired; but I
have been doing multitrack recording for around fifty years. I am still
learning the functions of this machine, and there are some features which I
cannot yet operate; however, I have produced some good songs on the unit -
all with the help of an Optacon with CRT lens!
If any musician on this list is seriously interested in obtaining a
dedicated hardware recorder for multitrack music creation, please write me
*OFF-LIST*, and I will try to provide you information.
