What I can say is that a dense tactile display does not necessarily in and
of itself make learning to read easier from scratch; the R1D display is
almost as good as it can ever get. A dense display (at this point in time
28 vertically * 15 horizontally) means that one's camera technique does not
have to be as rigid or as precise as we have been taught when using the R1D
and II, and so the process is more forgiving. This inherent flexibility
makes reading and learning easier in that results come more quickly and
clearly; the texture is not necessarily that much clearer than the R1D, but
the reading curve is smoother.

I belong to a few NFB lists, and I ask people how they liked
the optacon. So many of them said they hated the feeling on
their fingers and that trying to produce an optacon would be
a waist of time. That makes me so sad, I tried to explain
how a new optacon would be so much better, and the head of
the NFB list that I was on, said to stop the thread. He said
that there will never be another optacon, because it would
be way too expensive, and nobody would use it. I was so
upset when he said that. There are so many of you who love
your optacon, and the NFB says it is a waist of time. That
is just terrible.

Yes, and because OptaCon is so good, it was the greatest
mistake to stop manufacturing it. Besides all the OcR there
is I feel that optaCon was best we've had. Naturally, I'm
talking about the old models.
