Good point you make about the light probe. I generally want both an Optacon
and a light probe handy when I am dealing with musical electronics. I
currently have a Tascam DP24 on which I need both the Optacon and the light
probe. While I know the functions I use often, I need the light probe
mainly to verify which tracks are armed before I press that record button.
I use my Optacon to ensure that I am actually on the menu item I want when I
am creating a new song or doing other tasks in which an error in selection
could cause me to ruin a good song or trashing part of my current project.

Hello David.
Your experience with the Optacon helping with your drum machine
is similar to mine when I got my Technics keyboard in 1993. I
bought the keyboard, fully expecting not to be able to use the recording
sequencer part, but, after owning it for a month I
decided to have a go. I was able to read the drawings and
pictures in the instruction manual with the Optacon, and also able to
confirm display settings on the keyboard with the
Optacon. I eventually became able to use the seven channel
recording sequencer with comparative ease, no longer needing to use the
Optacon, but I can confirm which channels are live by using a light probe.
