Yes, Dave, it would be so great if a new Otpacon could be produced,
possibly with lower costs, given the availability of off-the-shelf
component that could make it feasible, perhaps with only very few parts
made specifically.
3d printers could help in this area as well...
I think 3d printers could do a lot for the production of low-cost devices...
I'm a dreamer, just like you, and I hope our dreams can come true sooner
than later...
Yes, I too pray for Charles...

Ollie

I never used the library with the Opticon, because of the noise it made.
I only used it at home when I was in college.
That would be just one advantage of the new opticon!
The pins would make hardly any noise at all.
You could hold the entire device in one hand,
You could also add memory to the optacon where it would remember what you
read, and even produced that on a Braille display.
The new Optacon could have peripheral devices hooked up to it.
The electronics could allow for no tingling to your fingers.
The pins would be totally different.
The same camera could read computer screens, screens at the airport, and all
that the blind wants screen readers to read.
You would only need one camera to read any surface.
A new Optcon would be out of this world.
I just wish I knew about the programming and the electronics to make one.
I pray that Charles is doing okay, because I heard he was pretty much
confined to bed.
We need to show an organization just what we can do with the Opticon, and
maybe, they would support it.
I pray we can get a hold of Charles.

Hello Cordelia,
Thanks for the tips!
I consider myself an "Optacon Acrobat", because I really do all sorts of
things with it... It's fun, besides being useful. The child part in me
loves experimenting, and since I'm a very strong reader, the fact of
going out to the newsstand or bookshop or library and just grab anything
and read it right away is quite an advantage!
I was hoping Charles would come up with his new Optacon, because I think
I understood that the actuators were more silent than the current ones,
which would have opened up the doors of libraries here...
The noise that the Optacon makes has always been a problem for accessing
libraries. I can go and get books to take home, but they wouldn't let me
consult books right there... sigh!
Has anyone had diffeent experiences in public libraries?
Ciao,
Ollie

it's perfectly okay to write out the German Umlaute in emails. Go ahead
typing ae, oe, ue, and even ss. The Swiss never use the sz symbol in any of
their correspondences, lucky guys! :-)
Back to using the Optacon, I should say that I do enjoy reading your takes
on using it and other related topics.
Best,
Cordelia

Thins is that I hate having to type letters with Umlaut, because they're
not in the Italian keyboard, and I'd have to use ASCII codes... Laziness
is the word...
