Catherine, first I'm Linda, not randy - but that's okay. I am a die-hard
randy Travis (country singer) fan as my e-mails state so no harm done.
I was a secretary - dependent on reading any of my typed mail that came in
for our managers and deciding what to be done with it. I usually scanned it
briefly to get the gist of it. My managers also would send things to my
desk when they had mail they wanted filed, thrown, etc. and would
write/print little sticky notes on them to either file, throw, follow-up,
things like that so I'd know what they wanted done with mail.. At the time,
I did not even have audio on the word processing system so I also was
dependent on my CRT lens to check the screens when needed.
Things today with all the technology may be a little different now but it
was because of the Optacon I was able to take the job and as I said, for the
most part, it worked; it was just those times when I truly did use it almost
50% of the time to do the job I was in a bind without it.
I was also our 5520 word Processing system backup person so again needed to
use the CRT lens for even that part of my work when the regular system
person was out.
Even though this was with IBM, at that time, I was not privileged enough to
have extra equipment such as scanners, Braille printers, etc.
Again, thanks to the Optacon, it was the reason I was put in such a job so
there is nothing like the Optacon for sure.

What kind of work was it? The biographical stories in which the Optacon
figures large in the getting and keeping of jobs are critical to any
future the Optacon might have. We all want to know more.
