Reinoud: if I may ask, I have two questions:
1. What is the diameter of the tactual pin felt by the user?
2. What is the distance between the centers of each of these pins both
vertically and horizontally?

Thanks,
Charles

Subject: [optacon-l] Display unit prices

Choosing between display frame options requires not only specifications or
descriptions, cost can be just as important. I have been calculating costs
for building single handmade units complete with embedded controller and USB
interface. Such display units can be connected to a USB-equipped PC, mobile
phone or specific controller (like a handheld camera unit).

Details can be found below, but here are nominal prices:

- 'Standard' Optacon-compatible layout, 6x24, 144 pins, up to 300Hz
vibration: GBP 1650
- 'Symmetric' (staggered) layout version, otherwise the same as Standard
Optacon-compatible: GBP 1650
- 'Mobile' version, 72 pins, up to 150Hz vibration: GBP 1090
- 'Flat3' 3-fingertip wide flat version, 24x10, 240 pins, up to 150Hz
vibration: GBP 1800 (up to 300Hz: GBP 1850)
- 'Flat2' 2-fingertip wide flat version, 16x10, 160 pins, up to 150Hz
vibration: GBP 1400 (up to 300Hz: GBP 1440)

Investing in such an early unit would enable anyone to support development
and set up local tests (or start software/application development).

Prices per unit may be lower when produced in higher numbers, and price
differences between frame types will become more obvious in that case.
Whether it makes sense to set up production like that remains to be seen
though, it would probably take something like 25+ units to be worthwile.
Right now I doubt a crowdfunding campaign would get that much support, and
single units like the ones listed above would have to be tested first
anyway.

Which types of controllers/drivers will become available for the displays is
not certain yet, but a generic (PC/Mac/Linux) 'screen scanner' system will
be available soon. Access to Android and iPhone/iOS screens will likely be
possible too, though there may be limitations with these mobile systems. If
you have any PC available you may be able to install the screen scanner
system yourself, the software will be made available free of charge.
Otherwise I will be happy build a dedicated system at nominal cost (say GBP
400). The screen scanner may well be implemented as an embedded unit later
on.

A few notes, of interest mostly if you actually wish to obtain one of these
early units:

- prices are for manually built display units with USB interface, in a
simple enclosure, incl. power supply, excl. power lead
- these early units are considered custom devices, don't hesitate to ask for
custom configurations and lead times
- prices are VAT-free right now, excl. shipping from the UK, any import
duties etc. (shipping will be at actual cost)
- contact me for details and arrangements
- prices are subject to change

Any support will be much appreciated, I won't be able to keep up development
at this rate indefinitely without support!
