Subject: [optacon-l] A really incredible reading experience
with my Optacon
This is Robert in Brooklyn, NY.
I use my optacon every day to read my mail, but yesterday, I
received a pamphlet written in large, very dark print. I am
unable to read this, so I skipped it and found regular size
print. The pamphlet was advertising a ring with my name
engraved on it. What was amazing is they showed how the
engraving would look, and I was able to decipher the fancy
print of my name as it would appear on the ring, the name
Robert. I also found a card, which had little holes on it
that could be punched out. I was able to read the small
print near each hole, explaining that this was a size guide,
and that you punched out the holes, and put your finger in
to see which size of ring would fit. It amazed me that I
was able to figure all this out, and even though I didn't
want the ring, I got a true delight in having worked out
what I had received. The only thing I could not read was
the name of the company, as there was a great deal of very
large, dark print, which I am not good at deciphering. I
put the card on my scanner and the scanner read the name,
The Danbury mint.
But to actually decipher a card that is used to find the
right ring size, that is a first for me, as I am usually not
good at any kind of schematics. It was truly a great deal
of fun, and I felt a real sense of accomplishment.
The optacon gives a raised picture in quite a lot of detail,
and I think is an invention as important as braille.
I would also like to mention that Richard Oehm electrified
and repaired this optacon, and it works beautifully. When I
sent it to him, the print was very muddy and thick, and hard
for me to read. Now I can get my letters nice and thin, and
it is a true pleasure to use.
