There is something you can try.
Perhaps, just using a can of compressed air (ie. Staples) can make a difference.
I had a problem where my optical drive in my MacBook would read CDs, but not
DVDs. Spraying the drive out three times, with a couple of minutes in between
each spray, fixed the problem for me.
