Stopped by Clapp Park on my way home from church today. When I got there, three
raptors were soaring over the park. One was a Turkey Vulture. The other two
were similar in size, but I only got a good look at one, an immature
Red-shouldered Hawk. The bird was quite vocal. I flushed it later along the
walkway between the ponds and from the pines on the south side of the ponds.
Waterfowl were about 75 ducks, mostly Wigeons, a dozen or so Northern
Shovelers, 5-6 Wood Ducks, and a Gadwall, along with 8-12 Coots and a single
Pied-bill Grebe. There was a single immature Black-Crowned Night-heron and a
Snowy Egret. Songbirds of note were a Spotted Towhee and an Eastern Phoebe.
There was also a yellowish warbler that disappeared before letting me ID it.
Mockingbirds, Blue Jays, House Sparrows and flyover Robins filled out the
songbirds. Not much number wise, but a few nice sightings.
