I headed out of the city yesterday evening to do a bit of rural evening
birding and night herping. Some playas got water and some have very little or
are practically dry. It was rather slow over all. I had one spirt of action
just after 1930. A farmer working his land East of CR5200 x CR2800 flus a
rather large group of shorebirds of different sizes. I think they came off a
distant dugout playa of sort that I have never noticed and don’t think we can
see from the road. All I could make out with my binos was the different sizes
and dark above / light below. Usually, shorebirds in the air at this distance
I just write them down as shorebird Sp. But, I happened to do the best thing
possible. I attempted to get photos of them at max zoom. I review the photos
this morning, with heavy cropping. It appears I got lucky! A Hudsonian
Godwhit was in the group, that is in focus enough to be able to ID. See photo
below.
