I want to clarify what I’ve been seeing out there, too. I think I was wrong
with my second report of a Short-eared Owl and have removed the sighting. When
Brad and I saw the Short-eared, it came out close to sunset. It conveniently
landed on the shore for 5-10 min and we got good views through the scope. I
went back around dusk a couple of days before Lena and saw an owl again. I
assumed it was the Short-eared, but something kept nagging at me and when Lena
saw the Barn Owl, it dawned on me that it may be what I saw the second time. It
was almost dark and I got fairly quick looks before it moved too far away, so
I’m leaving it as “owl sp.”.
To answer Bill’s questions, Lena spotted it when it was surprisingly light
outside, but near sunset. The overcast may have been helping with the light.
She will know the exact time. Yes, it is the same playa where the Short-eared
was seen recently.
Several of us were there last night and did not see an owl. Jim K and I got
there around 5pm and stayed until after dark. We birded both the E and W sides.
I’m going to check again on a colder night in hopes that if any are still there
they come out earlier.
Hope this helps.

Hi,
What time of day was the barn owl? This is the same playa, too, where the

was cold.
