Thanks for the heads up Jim.
 
I had a similar problem to Kathy but realplayer ahd taken over my mps files for 
some reason.  I discovered that on the export screen there was a button to 
launch the file into mapsource after creation and that worked well.  Then I 
also went into windows a few months later (when I got tired of reexporting the 
same file to be able to open it) and changed the default program for that file 
extension type.

Go to Garmins' website and download the newest version of Mapsource. It 
will let you open GPX files directly without conversion.
