Ever wonder what it costs to maintain GPS and keep it working? No, I'm not talking about the cost of AA batteries for your receiver, but what it costs taxpayers to keep those satellites flying, in proper orbital slots, building and launching replacements, and research to build better next generation satellites.

The current GPS program (under the Department of Defense) has a $571 million budget this year (everything they asked for - without any cuts), allocated as:
$296M for Research, development, testing & evaluation for newer/better/next generation satellites
$237.5M for producing more (replacemement) satellites
$24M for Operations & Maintenance
$13.5M for misc. items including computers on the ground to control the satellites
Meanwhile, WAAS, which is a FAA project, received a slight budget cut from $110.5M to $98.9M because they haven't been able to get additional WAAS satellites up there as quickly as previously planned, and therefore don't need additional budget to operate them.
