I have been thinking about the discussion we volunteers have been having
about improving the quality of bookshare scans.
Let's start with the idea that there are scans which come out better than
others and which are a part of bookshare. Let's also assume that everyone
submitting books wants to submit the best copy they can in the time each
person allots to scanning. In other words, poor scans are a result of
something other than the desire of the submitter to do a poor job.
Let's also figure that one of the best ways to improve scanning is by using
the latest software, particularly the optimizing feature in k1000. I know
k1000 has offered a free membership to bookshare for a period of time to
anyone who upgrades software or buys a new copy of k1000.
I am suggesting that bookshare officialdom speak to them about the idea of
giving some kinds of credits toward bookshare membership to anyone who buys
new software or upgrades existing k1000 software and who is already a
member of bookshare if that person submits books. As it stands now, I am
already a member of bookshare so if I upgrade my software I get no credits
toward bookshare. This might encourage some folks to upgrade software and
improve their scans.
