One more summer volunteer here in Palo Alto:

Hi! I'm Anushka Patil.

I volunteer at Bookshare in Palo Alto with a few of my friends. I'm a
sophomore at Monta Vista High School in Cupertino. When a friend of mine found
Bookshare while looking for summer opportunities, I knew that it would be the
kind of organization that I would want to work with. Being able to actually get
hands on with building a library for the visually impaired is very rewarding-
and fun. Scott, Geneva, Carrie, and the rest of the staff here at Bookshare are
all incredibly amazing, nice, and funny people to work with, and as a result,
the days that I volunteer here have become something to look forward to over my
long summer.

I started out at Bookshare first going through all the [physical] books
in one of their libraries and checking to see if they were in the database or
not, and later, organizing them. Currently, I'm working on a couple tasks. I'm
still checking a few books to see if they're in the database, and with others,
that have already been uploaded, I check metadata for the proper titles,
categories, and synopses. Another ongoing task is, of course, filing. Geneva
receives a horrendous amount of paperwork to file everyday, so my friends and I
are more than happy to help out with the work.

Bookshare has, and continues to be a very rewarding and insightful
experience for me. To be honest, I had never thought before this about how
visually impaired people would have access to books that aren't in Braille.
Volunteering at Bookshare has showed me that truly, when there is a will, there
is a way- if we want to give the visually impaired the same access as us to the
millions of books out there, we can. And it takes a lot of work, countless
people working and volunteering to make it possible, but in the end, it's worth
it. Bookshare is a wonderful organization for doing this, and I hope to
continue to work them to be a part of this amazing thing they do.
