Blind advocacy group's "Newsline" to grow

The National Federation of the Blind is partnering with an online digital
library to make more than 125 newspapers and magazines available over the
Web.

Bookshare.org and parent company Benetech said Wednesday they would add to
the titles -- which the "print-disabled" can access with screen-reading
software -- available on the Internet site, which was created by Baltimore's
National Federation of the Blind (NFB).

NFB-Newsline, as the service is called, has been delivering local and
national newspapers over the telephone to subscribers for years. The
expanded partnership will take advantage of new software and portable
computing devices to give blind and disabled people "access to crucial
information so that they may compete on equal footing with everyone else in
the world," said NFB President Marc Maurer in a statement.

"We feel we're already lowering the barrier to accessible daily news each
and every day," added Benetech CEO Jim Fruchterman in a statement.

National newspapers such as USA Today and the New York Times are offered, as
well as smaller papers such as the Paducah Sun, Spanish-language dailies
like La Opinion and magazines such as the New Yorker.

Users pay an annual subscription fee for unlimited access to the titles.
