Hi all,

Sue was asking about me and my work for Bookshare, so I thought I'd just
write the list.

<smile>. Sue, I'm glad you're interested in knowing more about me. That's
always nice to hear!

Currently, I am a full-time paid intern for Benetech, in other words, bookshare.org. I've been working for
a little over two months now. I actually work from at home in Arizona, I
don't live in Palo Alto where Benetech is located. I'm a little like Jake
Brownell in that. He lives in Illinois, but works for Benetech and has for
a while now. A lot of what I do for Bookshare deals with outreach to high
school and college students. I talk to schools, teachers, students,
parents, or anyone who is interested in the free student account options.
Mostly I just answer questions and explain how they get started. I also
represent Bookshare at student-related conferences as needed. When I'm not
doing that, I do validating, daisy book testing, work on submitting the
dozens of MSU donated textbooks that we're adding to the collection, and
pretty much anything else that Lisa, Claire, or Susie tells me to do.
<smile>. So far I really love working for Bookshare. And I promise I'm not
just saying that because the staff reads this mailing list! I genuinely
enjoy the job. It involves several of my favorite things -
books, technology, and work in the blindness field. It is an ideal position
and I consider myself very lucky to have it.

And that's that. Sue, I hope I answered your questions. You guys are
welcome to ask me anything about what I do whenever you like. I enjoy
hearing from everyone.

All the best,

Allison Hilliker:
Intern, Benetech (Bookshare.org).

Hey Allison,

Will you tell us what your job is with Benetech? I am just interested,
that
is all. I am unable to find anything about specific employees on the
site.

Thanks,

Sue S.

Hi,

I get my books un-bound at Kinkos. It costs about $1.50. Others may have
different ideas, but that's what I do.

Best,
Allison

I have a paperback book that is about 18 years old, and it's kind of
falling
apart. It looks like two of the other books in the same series are
already
in the bookshare collection, so people would probably like to have this
one
as well. Since it's falling apart already I think it would be best to
just
pull it completely apart for scanning. It's not quite battered enough to
completely come apart on its own, however. Any suggestions for removing
the
pages for scanning? The book is about 500 pages.
