Thanks Ed!! These resources and your detailed response helped a lot.
I didnt realize how specific this process is to the print
company/machine and/or the specific part type that one is trying to
print.

Yeah, there are several different processes and each has their own
benefits and problems.

I recognize that this technology is relatively new, but are there any
current standards in place? Like a NASA document or an ASME / SAE /
ASTM /
MIL spec?

Standards are only now being introduced (in the past few years) and are
still being developed.

The standards that I know of are:

ASTM F2924 - https://www.astm.org/Standards/F2924.htm
ASTM F3001
ASTM F3091 - https://www.astm.org/Standards/F3091.htm
ASTM F3049 - https://www.astm.org/standardization-news/?q=update/proper
ties-of-metal-powders-for-additive-manufacturing-ja14.html
ASTM F3055 - https://www.astm.org/Standards/F3055.htm
ASTM F3056 -

WK43112 - https://www.astm.org/standardization-news/?q=update/mechanica
l-properties-of-materials-made-via-additive-manufacturing-nd13.html

Search at ASTM for more:

https://www.astm.org/COMMIT/SUBCOMMIT/F4205.htm

I know NASA is working on standards, but I don't know if they're
publicly available yet.

The technology is not exactly "make a drawing and get a perfect print
first time and every time." This is still a technology that is in
development, in many cases.

But, progress is being made. I think Boeing has established their own
in-house processes and standards for some 3D printed jet engine parts.

Search for "dmls 3d printing design guidelines" for service providers
recommendations.
