GH2/GO2 mix was used in a massive chamber horizontal gas gun with a small
caliber barrel ±10 m long. To avoid explosive compression of He or GH2
"light gas". 
Off centre? Non-stoichiometric you mean; mix ratio was stoichiometric IIRC. 

Deflagration or detonation who cares? It worked. Years ago I sent pictures
of that eighties lab contraption in Moscow to AR. Twice. The aluminum
projectiles in part melted when hitting the atmosphere beyond the vacuum
barrel. Go figure. Too old a website for Google.
