Hi Lee,

Like yourself, Spam has never really been a big issue on my site.....
until recently, that is!!! Over the past 6 months I have had more and
more irate users yelling at me to do something about it. I have
flippantly suggested that I read every single email and manually filter
them before forwarding to the correct recipient, but they didn't see the
funny side!!!

For a couple of years, I have been using "SurfControl Email Filter for
SMTP" which handles all mail traffic before it gets to my E2K farm. I
recently discovered that it has an Anti-Spam Agent already installed
which simply needs to be unlocked. I am currently testing this, and it
does seem to be identifying and isolating a lot of rubbish.

There are still bits that get through so other methods have to be
examined.

I try to maintain a dictionary of typical words and phrases for lookups
as well as certain rules which block certain senders etc....

Also in "SCEF" are various options to include RBL lookups (Realtime
Blackhole Lists), of which I am looking to subscribe to a couple. I
understand that this also stops a lot of Spam.

Another method is for the gateway to perform a DNS MX lookup and to deny
the inbound messages if no DNS entry exists or if the FQDN of the
sending mail server in the HELO string fails to match the DNS query for
that domain etc....

I don't really have any other product to compare with, but SurfControl,
properly configured and installed with the extra Agents, does appear to
be a quality mail content/spam/virus/etc. filter. (in my honest
opinion)

Hope my contribution is at least partially helpful.

I'm sure this has been asked before, but since it didn't seem a
big issue at our site, I only skimmed the replies.... but, what is
everyone using for SPAM filtering on Exchange 2000?

Have been using Symantec Exchange 3.0 with the content filter
and it's not doing the best job according to some users....

Any thoughts on the subject are appreciated!

        Thanks!
