Primary Email Address

Hi everyone
i am having a problem on an EXchange 2000 server-i need to change someone's
email address from elaine@xxxxxxx to elainesmith@xxxxxxx due to spam. my
problem is that even though i set up the address in the users properties and
set the new address as the Primary one-it reverts back to the address in the
form of the login@xxxxxxx . does anyone know what im doing wrong?
