Mark,
Routing groups were not enabled by default. Once I enabled them, both
EX1 and EX2 became members of the same routing group (First Routing
Group). The bad news is that this did not help. The messages are still
stuck in the SMTP Virtual Server. DNS is no a problem either. I even
rebooted both Exchange servers and still no go. If you think of anything
else please let me know. Thanks for the help.

If they are part of the same routing group then it should route straight
away, assuming your DNS is OK, now if they are in different Routing
Groups
then you will need a connector between the routing groups.

OK, don't beat up on me too badly if this is a "no brainer", but I am no
Exchange guru. Here is my situation:
I have a fully functional enterprise with an Exchange 2000 Server (SP3)
running on Windows 2000 Server (SP4). The name of this server is EX1.
All external inbound email is routed via an external Sendmail server to
EX1. All internal mail is just that, internal mail. Everything works and
works well.
Today, I built an Exchange 2003 Server, also running on Windows 2000
Server (SP4). So now my "First Organization" contains two Exchange
Servers. The name of this server is EX2. No problem as everything seems
to be running well.
So, I created a new domain user (extest) and created a corresponding
mailbox, but this user's mailbox is on the new exchange server (EX2). I
then sent this new user email from both external and internal sources.
The emails never showed up in extest's inbox, rather they are stuck in a
queue on the Default SMTP Virtual Server on the old Exchange Server
(EX1).
Question: How do I get the emails from EX1 to EX2?
